Our facility utilizes the GE Lunar System (DEXA) that serves as a test that quickly and accurately measures the density of bone. It is used primarily to detect osteopenia or osteoporosis, diseases in which the bone’s mineral content and density are low and the risk of fractures is high.
Osteoporosis is the silent and progressive disease of the bones. It means “porous bone.” In healthy bone, there is a balance between the breakdown of old bone tissue and the manufacture of new, replacement material. In osteoporosis, breakdown occurs faster than replacement, and the bones become weak.
People with osteoporosis are at greater risk for fractures (over 1.5 million annually), especially of the spine, hip and wrist.
Women are at greater risk than men, especially after menopause. The loss of estrogen causes an acceleration of bone loss, sometimes as much as 5% per year for 6 years.
What should I do to prepare for my exam?
Typically, DEXA exams do not require any special preparation. Wear comfortable clothes. Gowns and a changing area will be available if needed. |
